Interview with William Chapman Sharpe

By briansholis

My interview with William Chapman Sharpe, author of the new book New York Nocturne: The City After Dark in Literature, Painting, and Photography, 1850–1950, has just been posted to Artforum.com. The study is ambitious and convincing, especially the chapter on James McNeill Whistler. (It’s why much of the interview focuses on the painter’s work.) To get a sense of what Sharpe attempts in this volume, click here to read the book’s description and here to read the introduction (warning: PDF link), which Princeton University Press has made available via its website.
